Biology Christian Perspective (Year Long: Grades 8-12)

Biology Christian Perspective (Year Long: Grades 8-12)

The majority of my classes are secular to meet the requirements for charter and private schools. But I do have a few that request Christian based science, especially in Biology. This class will meet that need and provide a Christian view in science.

Instructor: Jennifer Collins

Christian, Homeschool Mom, AWANA Leader (5 Yrs) & Certified Science Teacher (25 Yrs In The Classroom)

This course will feature a great way for like-minded students to join together every other week for instructions and labs in a self paced or live Zoom atmosphere. Each unit students will be provided new vocabulary to make notecards over, and then provided a link to the teacher Quizlet page to practice the new terms. Chapter pdfs will be provided for reading material and overview. In Google Classroom students will find 5 mini assignment tasks to complete each week. Those tasks will range from various science sketch activities, making models of topics out of clay, case studies/research, concept mapping, essential questions, and practice tests.  Assessments will be provided using a game type format on Quizizz. The course will feature a lab component, with additional nature journaling and nature collection activities. Each week the group will be provided an optional science themed Bible verse to work on.

Class Features:

-Full Year Hybrid Course (2 Semesters)

-5 Weekly Assignments In Google Classroom (85 Assisgnments Per Semester)

-Lab Component

This Course Will Focus On Kinesthetic-Tactile Learning Labs, Using Lots Of Hands-On Activities To Help With Comprehension.

Common Questions:

1) How does self pacing work? Students log in on Mondays to begin the week's assignments. The goal is to finish the week by Friday night. Students can work at a reduced or accelerated pace during self paced courses.

2) Will grading be provided? Yes, quiz and tests will be provided. Students will be provided a code to take online tests.

3) Will you cover evolution? During the first unit students will be taught that biology consist of living items, and how living items change and evolve overtime. Butterflies and moths have changed colors over time to help with survival adaptations, so this example will be discussed. But evolution will not be taught, or Darwinism. Instead, this class will focus on the basic topics of Biology.

4) Will my child have to memorize a Bible verse? No, an optional Bible verse will be provided each week but it is only for encouragement.

5) Will my child need a microscope? No, microscopes can be a financial hardship for many families. We will look an images of microscopic organisms instead.

6) Will you dissect items? We will dissect a flower apart to see the reproductive parts, take samples of leaves, and students will be encouraged to dissect an invertebrate (crayfish, grasshopper, etc).

7) How much time would the student need to devote to the class? Each week will consist of a lesson and 5 mini assignments. Each assignment will take around 25-40 minutes. Students will move at their own pace during the week, working on completing all of the assignments due before the next week.

8) Can public or private school students take the course? Yes, it is open to all students. Many public school students enroll for additional practice.

9) What grade level is the class? This is a high school level course, so it is best for 8th grade and up.

10) What type of parent involvement is needed? Parents are asked to log into Google Classroom once a week to look over the student's work and to encourage weekly uploads.
