In-Person Moon Phases & Crater Lab
Did you know that we have 8 phases of the Moon? The eight lunar phases are, in order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. The cycle repeats once a month (every 29.5 days).
For our monthly lab in March we will be learning about the phases of the Moon and craters.
Moon Phase Lesson-
A short lesson will be presented to the class, and then students will draw the phases in their spiral notebook and label each one.
Moon Phase Lab-
Using popsicle sticks and Oreos, students will shave down the circle of icing on each cookie to represent a phase. After all 8 phases are made, the group will eat their creation.
But wait, we are not finished yet....then the group will learn how craters exist on the Moon.
Crater Lesson-
A short lesson will be presented on the crust of the Moon, and crater sizes. A discussion on what each student would name a crater will be presented, and current crater names will be given.
Crater Lab-
Students will receive their own pan with flour, and then a marble/ruler. Students will work individually or in groups to drop the marble from various heights. The goal is to make a hypothesis on how height affects the imprint from the marble in the flour.
The class will begin promptly at 3:30pm. Pre-registration will be required. Supplies will be provided so register early to provide time for individual supply bags to be made. The class will take around an hour. Afterwards, families are encouraged to walk the Nopone nature trail with new friends.
