After registration, families will be provided a Zoom link to join on the day of the class. Students will then join and receive a short lesson in geology. The lesson will consist of two short 4 minute videos to introduce the types of rocks, and the rock cycle. Mrs. Collins will show some of her rocks. Students will be encouraged to hold up any unique rocks they have found to show the class too. All registrants will also receive a rock cycle worksheet before the class. The class will go over and add/sketch components of the rock cycle to the worksheet before the lab. Then the group will perform the lab together on the Zoom. At the end of class the group will be provided a code to click in the Zoom chat to take an optional but fun rock cycle quiz on Quizizz.

Parent involvement: Little or no parent involvement is needed til the end of the lab. The last part of the lab will involve putting starburst into the microwave for 12 seconds. Students will be encouraged to not touch the starburst but observe that portion as it demonstrates how igneous rocks are made.

Zoom: If you or your child is new to Zoom, I would recommend practicing using the program. You can setup a Zoom for the child in one room of the house and then join the link with your phone or another computer for practice. This will help the student feel confident using the program on the day of class.

Note: Our program provides self paced classes using Google Classroom during the school year. When you register you will see a box asking for the student's gmail. Please leave the box blank when registering or put the parents' email instead since a gmail is not needed for this summer course.

We will need a minimum of 5 students to attend to have the class. If the mininum is not met, and the class is cancelled you will be provided 100% refund.

FAQ:

-What if my child can not attend, but I paid for the class? A Zoom recording of the class will be available for all students who could not attend or who prefer to watch the video instead.

-What if I have two children (siblings)? Please email sciencewithcollins@gmail.com to ask for the sibling voucher code.

-Does my child have to keep the Zoom camera on? At the beginning I would like to do a check in to make sure we have children attending the Zoom so please join with the Zoom camera on or turn it on at the beginning. After check in, your child is welcome to turn off the Zoom camera if they prefer. But we will all be doing the lab, with the shared screen pinned to the teacher screen if that helps.

-What grade levels are best for this class? This class is best for grades 3-7, but please reach out if you have questions or would like an exception.

-Will my child get a chance to talk on the Zoom? We will have a short time where students will be asked to hold up a rock they have found for optional show/tell. This will occur before the lab. At this time the class will only hold up a rock. At the end of class I will open it up for questions or a discussion. But your child will not be required to speak.
