Biology Petri Dish Unit Study Grades 4-12 (SP, 4 Weeks)

In this class students (4th-12th grade) will complete an online unit study over bacteria and complete an at-home petri dish study.
Week 1-learn about different types of bacteria, bacteria components, and common bacteria in the home
Week 2-learn about how to create an effective petri dish sample
Week 3-4 These two weeks are sample and data weeks. Students will complete the project at home sampling bacteria on common surfaces (toilet, sink, tv remote).
When the course is finished, the student will create a posterboard with the results to upload to Google Classroom.
This class is a great way to introduce the world of bacteria to students and to encourage using the scientific method in science.
Supplies needed:
agar filled petri dishes (5 minimum or 10 maximum)
gloves
q tips
invisible tape
hand sanitizer
hand soap (Dawn type dishwashing soap)
glitter
plate
water
pepper
posterboard
coloring pencils, markers or crayons
sticky notes or pieces of paper
scissors
construction paper
white computer paper
spiral notebook
clay, play-doh or homemade play-doh
toothpicks
